Richard Grenell, the U.S.’ top intelligence official under former President Donald Trump, says Democrats are looking to soften the U.S.’ position on China because the Bidens are vulnerable and the whole Biden team — “Jake Sullivan and the new secretary of state (Antony Blinken) — are all China apologists for many years.”
“The Democrats have for four years have been trying to say that Russia is a crisis. I want to be clear. I think Russia is a problem. But China has been the crisis that they have ignored,” Grenell said Thursday during an appearance on Newsmax TV’s “John Bachman Now.”
“And the Beijing line — what China wants politicians in the United States to do is to say, ‘Look at Russia, don’t look at us.’ And that’s exactly what the Democrats have been doing — Eric Swalwell, Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein. There are a whole bunch of people that have been pushing this Beijing line. I think that the Biden team fell for it and the Trump team was successful in pointing out the flaws.”
White House press secretary Jen Psaki earlier this week said the Biden administration will approach Beijing with “patience” as it reviews its policy on China in consultation with allies.
“What we’ve seen over the last few years is that China is growing more authoritarian at home and more assertive abroad,” she told reporters. “And Beijing is now challenging our security, prosperity, and values in significant ways that require a new U.S. approach.”
Still, Grenell said Biden won't be as harsh as the Trump administration and to “look no further than right before the campaign” when 50 former U.S. intelligence officials said Hunter Biden’s laptop was actually Russian disinformation.
“They did not want us to look deep into the China issue because I think the Bidens are very vulnerable and the whole Biden team — Jake Sullivan and the new secretary of state — are all China apologists for many years,” he said.
“So now I think what they’re going to have to do is explain why they would roll back the policy on being tough with China. They can’t do it right now. They’ve got to wait a little while. But make no mistake, they will look to soften the position. They want consensus around the world.”
