Attorney: Liberals Now Pushing Religion Off School Calendars

A decision by Maryland's largest school district to strip religious holidays from next year's school calendar isn't illegal, Eric Baxter, counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, said on Newsmax TV Thursday, but instead is "indicative" of how religion is being pushed to the side.

"There's not likely to be a court case about it, but it is indicative of a misunderstanding that somehow mentioning religious holidays like Christmas or Rosh Hashanah creates a constitutional crisis," Baxter said on "America's Forum."

The holidays were removed after Muslim parents complained that there were none of their holidays listed on the calendar. "There really is no reason a school board can't list religious holidays," said Baxter. "Religion is part of our history and part of our culture. We should celebrate religious diversity."
