The Trump White House is "clumsy" in some of its communication efforts about Russia accusations and other topics, former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu said Monday.
Sununu spoke with Newsmax TV's Steve Malzberg and was asked about the White House's handling of the saga involving Donald Trump Jr. and the meeting he and others had with a Russian lawyer last year on the promise of obtaining dirt about Democrat Hillary Clinton.
"They get clumsy on a lot of things. It's a hard environment to operate in," said Sununu, author of "The Quiet Man: The Indispensable Presidency of George H.W. Bush."
"Trying to recollect what happened a year ago at what might have been 200 meetings in that period of time. I can understand how difficult it is but like you, I don't understand why they didn't work extra hard to get it right the first time."

Sununu, who worked as a White House chief of staff under former President George H.W. Bush, noted that opposition research is part of political campaigns — but people need to be careful about how they obtain it.
"Most politicians would have tried to figure out how to get their hands on that opposition research. That doesn't mean that they would've met," Sununu said.
"And so yes, I will acknowledge the important part of that, that it would’ve been nice to figure out how to get ahold of that opposition research, but I really do think taking the meeting was not the smartest thing in the world."
The meeting, which occurred last June at Trump Tower, ended up being about Russian adoptions and the Magnitsky Act. No information about Clinton was exchanged, Trump Jr. said.
