Dick Morris: Trump, Hillary Can't Win in Nov. 'On Their Merits'

By    |   Wednesday, 20 April 2016 06:18 PM EDT ET

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are both unelectable because "when either runs on their merits, just straight up, they're not going to win," political strategist Dick Morris told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"If Trump becomes the issue, he'll lose — and if Hillary becomes the issue, she will lose," Morris told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "The reason Trump and Hillary are winning these primaries … is because they're running in their party primaries.

"Once you get outside of the Republican primary, Trump's negatives are in the 70s — and once you get outside of the Democratic primary, Hillary's are in the mid-60s. They both have great difficulty appealing outside of their bases."

Therefore, Morris concluded, "They have to wage very different kinds of campaigns.

"From Hillary's point of view, she has to run as the woman running for president — not Hillary, but the first woman running for office," he told Hayworth. "She has to say she's running to stop Donald Trump from eviscerating and destroying all the progress women have made.

"Donald has to run the race entirely based on Hillary's corruption," Morris continued. "He should say to Hillary: 'The issue isn't are you going to the White House or not, but why haven't you gone to jail?'

"The campaign between them is going to be particularly fierce."
