President Donald J. Trump told Newsmax TV host Sean Spicer on Wednesday that former Vice President Joe Biden, his presumed Democratic opponent in November, has treated African Americans "very bad" and "hasn't done anything, except things that were bad for the black population."
On Tuesday, Biden stated the nationwide protests triggered by the homicide of George Floyd in Minneapolis reflect frustration with “systemic racism” in America. Biden blamed Trump for being “part of the problem.”
Trump, speaking on "Spicer & Co." in an exclusive interview with his former press secretary, told Newsmax in response: “He’s been there for 43 years, why didn’t he do something about it? I’ve only been doing this for three and a half years. He’s been there 43, 44 years. He was there eight years as vice president. He had plenty of time.”
Trump suggested Biden may have been distracted by other interests.
"I mean, he was taking a lot of vacations," Trump said, "taking it easy, sending his son over to China to pick up a billion and a half dollars, sending him over to Ukraine where he was paid $83,000 a month and $3 million upfront or something.
"I would tell you, he had plenty of time, why didn't he do this?"
Trump's conclusion, "This is Sleepy Joe. But now he's talking about systemic racism in the police department. Why wouldn’t he have done something about it? He had all the time. Now he’s saying 'I'm going to stop [it]. Well, he's had 43 years."
Left-leaning media have criticized Biden for his alliances with pro-segregation Democrats during his early years in the U.S. Senate, a time Biden has fondly recalled as one of "some civility" in the Senate.
Said Trump to Newsmax: "He was a senator in all fairness, that's [a] very big position, you could do what you wanted to do. But then he was vice president for eight years.
"He hasn't done anything, except things that were bad for the black population. Very bad. [The] African American population was treated very bad by Biden. He didn't know it. And he doesn't know it now, honestly, 'cause I don't think he knows where he is."
