Some people are understandably wary of immediately venturing out as the state begins to open back up, but they will warm to it as they begin to see safe practices being put in place by businesses, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tells Newsmax TV.
"There's always some reluctance," Abbott said Monday on "Greg Kelly Reports." "This a slow process, when people have been facing headlines like they have been facing, when they've seen the death toll, especially in places like New York and New Jersey, in some places like that. So there are some clear reasons why some people are afraid of this."
But Abbott says he has been out to eat at restaurants four times and has observed the safe practices first-hand. Once others begin to see and hear about the safety precautions taking place, they will begin to venture out as well, he said.
Abbott also predicted, if he began phase 2 opening, the mainstream media would not report that Texas number of coronavirus-related deaths and cases has actually decreased over the past two weeks under phase 1.
"It seems like whenever these announcements come out, oh, there's some horror story: There's a spike in deaths," Abbott said. "Today we have the lowest number of deaths since early April.
"Mark my words: There will not be one mainstream media that has as their lead, 'Texas opens up with a spike down in the number of deaths.'"
