Picking up the pieces on President Joe Biden's ceasing of border wall construction might ultimately cost the state of Texas less than it would have the federal government, according to Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott on Newsmax.
"We're not having to invent the wheel; we're just having to apply the wheel that's already been invented," Abbott told Wednesday's "Spicer & Co."
"And with the land that we already have available to us, it looks like it will be costing Texas a whole lot less than it did the Trump administration."
The border wall resumption in Texas is "happening faster" than even Abbott believed, because contractors are eager to get back to the construction the Biden administration halted and those that lost bids are now seeking to potentially compete on price.
"I've got to tell you, it's advancing faster than I thought it would, and there's an easy explanation for it," Abbott told co-hosts Sean Spicer and Lyndsay Keith, adding one delay is the hiring and public bidding process of a program manager to oversee the project.
"But the reason why it's happening faster is because we've already received a lot of information from companies and businesses that built the wall under the Trump administration or offered bids to do so."
Abbott is also dealing with the ongoing absence of Texas state House Democrats who broke quorum during his 30-day special session to avoid losing votes to obstruct election integrity laws and other legislation.
"This is just a stunt by the Democrats, because when you think about what they've accomplished, actually they've accomplished nothing – other than maybe perhaps infecting others with COVID," Abbott said. "They're achieving nothing, while leaving behind in the state of Texas unfinished business, business that is more than just the election integrity bill that we're trying to get passed."
Among the other items on the special session docket is "the broken bail system," and Abbott noted seven people were killed in Texas by criminals let out on bail since the Democrats first broke quorum in the Texas state House in May.
"So everybody in the state is endangered by the reckless behavior of these Democrats who are vacationing up in Washington, D.C., accomplishing absolutely nothing," Abbott warned, adding there are myriad more assaults and rapes by criminals let out on bail during this period.
Abbott has vetoed the appropriations for the entire legislative branch in Texas, effectively defunding lawmakers until they come back in full session and pass bills, which includes their own government paychecks.
