Grover Norquist: Trump Needs to Keep Talking About the Economy

By    |   Friday, 16 September 2016 06:35 PM EDT ET

Donald Trump will gain more support during his presidential campaign if he continues to highlight the economy, a tax expert told Newsmax TV.

Grover Norquist, the founder and president of Americans for Tax Reform, discussed the issue with host J.D. Hayworth on "Newsmax Prime."

"I think that's exactly what will happen, as long as Trump stays focused on economics," Norquist said Friday. "This is where [President Barack] Obama and Hillary [Clinton] are weakest. This recovery is extremely weak. We are millions of jobs short of where we should be.

"We don't have the growth we need and Hillary will give us more than a trillion dollars in tax increases. That's her threat or promise. Exactly what Obama did. She wants to do more stimulus spending. All the things that didn't work for Obama she wants to do again.

Norquist added that Trump is following the path set by former President Ronald Reagan, which is to reduce interest rates, lower taxes, have less government regulation, and create more jobs.

"We've seen that when Reagan ran against Carter and when Reagan ran against Mondale. We know how these elections work out," Norquist said.

Norquist also spoke about the situation in which millions of Americans over the last two decades have uprooted themselves and their families to move to states with lower tax rates. That, he said, will leave some states like New York and California wondering how they're going to pay for programs that rely on taxpayer money.

"If the people who are paying the taxes leave the state, what are you going to create a welfare state with?" he said.
