Large donations made to the Clinton Foundation while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state may not be illegal, but are without a doubt "unseemly," former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay says.

"My only disappointment is I wish this was going on about a year from now than right now," DeLay, a Texas Republican, said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Even if she's not guilty of something illegal, this is so unseemly."

A new book, "Clinton Cash" by Peter Schweizer, alleges the State Department under Clinton approved the sale of one of America's largest uranium mines at the same time a charity supported by the Clinton Foundation received a donation from the seller's charitable foundation, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The book is also said to outline a number of potential conflicts of interest between Clinton's work at the State Department and her charitable work.

"Wait until we get the real story of the Clinton Foundation — how it took in its money, did money actually go to the Clintons during this or paid for their expenses in different ways," DeLay said.

"What is the collusion between the Clinton family and this foundation? From there, all kinds of other things are going to happen. Judicial Watch, a watchdog organization in D.C., is looking into [it] and getting some records through suing the State [Department]."

The Clinton Foundation, a nonprofit set up by Bill and Hillary Clinton and their daughter Chelsea, says its mission is to "convene businesses, governments, NGOs, and individuals to improve global health and wellness, increase opportunity for women and girls, reduce childhood obesity, create economic opportunity and growth, and help communities address the effects of climate change."
