Former NYPD detective Bo Dietl told Newsmax TV he likes and respects House Speaker Paul Ryan and the GOP should replace him with a moderate Republican to lead the House after his January retirement.
Dietl was on Wednesday's "Newsmax Now" and said he believes Ryan's insistence he is retiring from Congress is to spend more time with his family.
"I truly believe that's one of the reasons why," Dietl said. "Remember, he's been a United States congressman for 20 years. He's been in for a long time. And you know something? I respect his family values.
"I give him a lot of accolades to be a good father, a good husband. There's no scandal around him, he's been a really good person as far as I'm concerned."

Ryan, who has a wife and three children, announced his retirement plans Wednesday morning. The discussion quickly turned to who would replace the Wisconsin Republican and whether Republicans will hold their majorities in the House and Senate in the fall midterms.
"We have to have a moderate Republican Party so that we could even bring some moderate Democrats on board, some Blue Dog Democrats on board," Dietl said. "That's what the answer's gotta be."
