Huckabee on Trump's Mexico Plan: It's a 'Shrewd' Idea

Donald Trump's plan to build a 10-foot-high wall along the southern border to keep illegal immigrants from crossing over — and forcing Mexico to pay for its construction — is a "shrewd" idea that is "entirely possible," former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee tells Newsmax TV.

"I think it's a shrewd plan. One thing you have to realize is Donald Trump has been very, very smart in his business career by winning, negotiating battles over everything from zoning to construction," Huckabee said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"You don't get to be who he is and where he is without having some really, really shrewd, clever ideas about getting what you want."

As The Washington Post reported this week, Trump says he'll force Mexico to pay for a border wall by threatening to cut off billions of dollars Mexican immigrants send home.

In his proposal, Trump would change a rule under the anti-terrorism Patriot Act to stop the flow of money transfers sent to Mexico, but would withdraw the plan if Mexico makes "a one-time payment of $5 to $10 billion" to finance the wall.

"All these people that dismiss him and say oh that's nonsense, that'll never happen," Huckabee told Malzberg.

"If they listen to how he plans for that to happen, will Mexico write a check? Probably not, but could it be funded, in fact, by Mexico in essence? Yeah. Given the way that he has described it, I think that's entirely possible."
