President Donald Trump is right to put forth an immigration reform plan because Congress cannot get the job done, conservative commentator Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV.
Reagan was Wednesday's "Newsmax Now" and weighed in on a White House immigration proposal that will be introduced Thursday.
"It's been 33 years since the Congress of the United States has done anything, and they're still not doing anything," Reagan said. "And so you have the president, [senior White House adviser Jared] Kushner, and [South Carolina GOP Sen. Lindsey] Graham saying, 'hey, we're gonna put something on the table. Something needs to be done.'
"Everybody now agrees there is a crisis going on at the border that needs to be taken care of. And it's not being taken care of by the Congress controlled by the Democrats. It wasn't taken care of when the Republicans were in charge, either. Now it's up to the president, and he puts Kushner, somebody he trusts, in charge of it."
Graham also has an immigration proposal, which he unveiled Wednesday.
Reagan said regardless of what immigration plan ends up being used, one thing is clear: a wall is needed.
"You look at San Diego, I was down there for years, you look at what's going on in Yuma, Arizona, and other places on the border. Yes, a wall is needed," he said.
"It sends a statement to those in Central America, in the triangle, that 'hey, we're serious. We don't want you to come here.'"
