Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told Newsmax on Tuesday that she was "thrilled" that one of the many executive orders President Donald Trump signed soon after the inauguration involved a federal government hiring freeze and ordering government workers to return to the office that goes hand in hand with one of her legislative proposals.
Blackburn said on "Wake Up America" that her legislation has "things you have to do to set the parameters around reducing what the federal government spends and being able to reduce the size of the federal work force … so that you're not adding to those components. That is a first step."
Blackburn also mentioned her "bill that requires employees to show up to work and moves us from a tenure promotion status to a merit-based promotion status."
She said, "I was thrilled to see the president take those actions, and I hope we are going to be able to move my legislation forward quickly."
Blackburn, who had a front-row seat for the inauguration, said it "was so exciting to be in the rotunda and sit so close to where the president took the oath and where he gave his remarks. It was just such a joyous day of celebration."
She added that "the American people really have given not only the president, but Congress, a mandate" to carry out Trump's policies.
"President Trump promised he would do that, and he started on it yesterday as soon as he was sworn in," she said, with one example being the Senate on Monday passing the Laken Riley Act with the support of 12 Democrat senators.
"The American people fully understand that these criminal gangs and these cartels are bringing people into our communities that are carrying out crimes," Blackburn said. "Putting this legislation forward that would require ICE to deport these criminal illegal aliens is a solid step, and we are looking forward" to further actions being taken soon, "so we can return to safety and security in our communities."
The senator also remaked on the preemptive pardons Joe Biden gave just before he ended his presidency to numerous family members and others involved in policies surrounding COVID-19.
"The American people want to know what happened with COVID, and they want to know what kind of association the Biden family had with foreign entities, and you don't give a preemptive pardon to someone you think did nothing wrong," Blackburn said.
