Kendall Coffey: Same-Sex Marriage Unstoppable

A New Jersey judge's ruling that the Garden State must allow same-sex couples to marry is part of a trend sweeping the country that is likely unstoppable, attorney and legal analyst Kendall Coffey says.

"That's the momentum that's in our midst and it's going to continue … It's not surprising ..." Coffey told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"I don't know what's going to happen when this is reviewed by appeals courts in New Jersey, but this is far from the last decision like this we're going to see."

Story continues below video.

On Friday, Judge Mary Jacobson of State Superior Court in Mercer County ruled New Jersey must allow same-sex couples to wed, noting that failing to do so robs them of rights guaranteed by the federal government.

It is the first time a court has struck down a state ban on same-sex marriage as a result of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act in June.

Expect more state courts to follow with similar decisions, predicts Coffey, a founding partner of Coffey Burlington, who served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

"I think the vast majority … are going to rule in favor of allowing gay marriage," he said.
