Kendall Coffey: 'I'm Surprised' Court Passed on Gay Marriage Bans

Veteran lawyer and legal analyst Kendall Coffey says he's surprised the Supreme Court declined to take up the red-hot issue of gay marriage, a move that allows gays and lesbians to wed in five states where same-sex weddings were banned.

"It just struck me that this was an issue that had so much attention, so much focus — well over 40 cases around the country, federal and state have addressed this issue — that I thought they would say … the Supreme Court needs to weigh in," Coffey said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"They went a different direction we're left with speculating as to why, but I'm surprised and most observers are surprised that the Supreme Court decided not to decide."
