Democratic efforts to protect Russia special counsel Robert Mueller are "unconstitutional," former federal prosecutor Larry Klayman told Newsmax TV on Thursday.

"The power to appoint Mueller, the power to remove him lies with the Justice Department," Klayman, founder of Freedom Watch, told "Newsmax Now" host Bill Tucker in an interview.

He said he has filed complaints with the federal Office of Professional Responsibility against Mueller because of the leaks in the Moscow probe.

"He should be removed for that — and he can be prosecuted for that," Klayman told Tucker. "There are two to three leaks a day.

"This is an attempt to destroy the president and everybody around him, even if there are never indictments, even if there's no impeachment proceedings."
