The late ambassador Chris Stevens planned to resign as U.S. ambassador to Libya before the end of his term, his former fiancée told
Newsmax TV Monday.
Stevens' stint as the top American diplomat in Libya lasted just three months. He was killed in a terror attack on the U.S. consulate on Sept. 11, 2012.
"He was not going to finish his term as ambassador because it was getting too dangerous. He was going to choose to leave," Lydie Denier told Steve Malzberg. "He will have stayed two years and that's it. Unfortunately, he didn't get the chance to do it."

U.S. ambassadors generally serve three-year terms at outposts across the world. Stevens sent hundreds of requests for more security in and around the American compound in Benghazi, Libya, but many of them were declined by Hillary Clinton's state department.
"It was not just a few requests, it was 600 requests for [more] security," said Denier, who is working on a documentary about Stevens' life. "If the roles were reversed, [if] Hillary is the ambassador in Libya and Chris is secretary of state, he would have done a better job watching her back. And if it was her daughter who had been ambassador to Lybia, let me tell you, she would have moved the Earth to get her daughter out of there alive."
