Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., hailed Attorney General William Barr as having done a "wonderful job," praising him Monday on Newsmax TV for his 22 months in the position.
Blackburn gave a glowing review of Barr's tenure in charge of the Department of Justice in an appearance on "Spicer & Co."
"[Attorney] General Barr has done a wonderful job, and his service to this country is a respected service that's been an appreciated service," said Blackburn, 68, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "I was so pleased when we had the opportunity to confirm him to the AG post, and I am appreciative of the job he has done."
Blackburn's comments came within the hour of the announcement of the resignation by Barr, which was first disclosed in a Twitter post by President Donald Trump.
Barr, 70, was the third man to hold the top law enforcement post in the United States under Trump following Jeff Sessions and Matt Whitaker. He had previously held the position in the administration of George H.W. Bush from August 1991 to January 1993.
Trump said Barr will leave the job before Christmas.
One of his last acts was to elevate U.S. Attorney for Connecticut John Durham to the status of special prosecutor investigating the origins of the counterintelligence probe of the 2016 Trump campaign and accusations of a conspiracy with Russian officials to undermine the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.
