Bernie Kerik to Newsmax TV: Mexico Regrets Not Paying for Wall

Mexico should have entertained the idea of helping the United States build a border wall, considering what it is going through with thousands of migrants camped out in Tijuana, former NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kerik told Newsmax TV.

During an appearance on Tuesday's "Newsmax Now," Kerik said the situation at the border shows how broken America's immigration system is.

"If you look at the videos of Clinton and Obama talking about immigration, talking about the borders, talking about the broken system, it's exactly what Trump says today," Kerik said.

"Looking at some of the footage, I have to laugh: I'm wondering if Mexico isn't looking at this now thinking, you know what, maybe we should have helped the United States pay for the wall instead of going through what we're going through now after this caravan that has completely annihilated Mexico."

Several thousand migrants walked from Central America and up through Mexico in recent weeks with the hope of gaining entry into the U.S. The Trump administration is not allowing them in and is instead asking the people to apply for asylum status and wait for their case to be heard.

There is now a backup of thousands of people in Tijuana, a city that was unprepared for so many people. It was forced to shut down a mass shelter for the migrants out of public health concerns.

All of that is playing out just a short drive from the U.S. border, but Kerik said many Americans do not know the whole story.

"No, they don't because they're skewed by the mainstream media," he said. "They're skewed by the media in general, depending on which station you're watching. I think this is a common-sense issue . . . get the congressman and the senators for once — once — do your job.

"We keep hearing it's a bipartisan issue. Well, if it's a bipartisan issue and it's really a bipartisan issue, why are we having such a hard time getting anything done?"

More than 5,000 U.S. troops are currently deployed to the border to help the Border Patrol shore up its defenses. It was reported Tuesday they might be there until the end of January.
