Michael Reagan: Media Not Exploiting Shooting for Ratings

Michael Reagan says the National Rifle Association's claim the media is exploiting the Florida high school massacre in which 17 people were shot dead is not true.

"I don't agree they are exploiting it at all – listen, everybody is covering it," Reagan, a veteran political commentator and son of President Ronald Reagan, told host Miranda Khan on Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live."

"It doesn't matter where you turn — whether it's too the left, to the right, whatever — everybody wants to solve this problem of these massive school shootings in which children in fact die."

Reagan's comments came shortly after NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch hit out at coverage of the tragedy at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week.

"Many in legacy media love mass shootings," Loesch said. "You guys love it. Now, I'm not saying you love the tragedy, but I am saying that you love the ratings. Crying white mothers are ratings gold to you . . ."

Reagan also said he is not sure about suggestions that more classroom teachers need to be armed in a bid to stop crazed intruders with firearms, but schools do need more security.

"I'm really not in for, you know, putting teachers, guns in their pockets and having shootouts in the hallways, which could happen if you will at this point, but put somebody who's visible," he told Khan.

"I think if you're somebody who wants to go into a school and shoot it up and there's a visible guard there who is armed, you're going to think twice about going into that school and shooting, if you're going to be shot back at."

Reagan is the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," written with Jim Denney and published by Humanix Books.
