Ronald Reagan's first — and lasting — lesson to his son was about "love of family," Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV on Friday.

"I actually have a letter in the book that he wrote to me on the occasion of my marriage of how important it was what a man really needs to do," Reagan told "The Hard Line" host Ed Berliner. "It really was truly about love and loving the woman.

"He says in the letter: 'Always remember when you come home at night, there's somebody on the other side of that door waiting for the sound of your footsteps.' Boy, how true it is.

"When you think that 20 million children will go to bed tonight without a father in the home because marriage is just evaporated," Reagan posed. "There's children out there who don't have a father.

"And even though my father and my mother were divorced, my father never really forgot that he had that first family of Maureen and myself and did everything he could to spend as much time with us as possible.

"So," Reagan concluded, "if he taught me anything, he taught me about love of family."

The eldest son of the nation's 40th president, Michael Reagan's new book is "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan."
