The South Carolina Republican primary Saturday was really about who would place second between Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, political commentator Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV.

"The fight really was for second and third," Reagan, the eldest son of former president Ronald Reagan, told host J.D. Hayworth on the "Newsmax TV 2016 South Carolina Primary Special" in an interview. "Everybody knew who was going to come in first."

As for the remaining three contenders, they are "going to have to look at themselves and ask: 'Should I stay in the game — and if I don't stay in the game, should I endorse somebody who is in the game?'" Reagan said.

"Right now, I imagine that there's a lot of talk among those who came in fourth, fifth and sixth."
