Outgoing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo offered a piece of advice to his replacement in the Biden administration, Secretary of State-nominee Tony Blinken, on Newsmax TV: "Stay on your priorities."
Pompeo shared some words of wisdom for his successor on "National Report."
"My advice to everyone who gets the enormous privilege that I have had to serve America and defend our Constitution is to focus on the things that matter most," he said. "Stay on your priorities. Remember why it is that you're there."
He said Blinken should always remember he is there to "serve the American people" and to "support and defend the Constitution."
Blinken, who served as deputy national security adviser and deputy secretary of state under the Obama administration, appeared before senators during a committee hearing Tuesday night.
Pompeo told Newsmax TV, anyone who enters into government service should stay focused on that and not allow any outside noise to "impinge on your moment" and the "time that you have to have a real impact."
"That's the wisdom I gave to my whole team while I was serving as secretary of state, and I'd give it to anyone who enters into government service," he said.
Meanwhile, Pompeo did not comment on whether he has future presidential campaign aspirations for himself, but told Newsmax TV he plans to take a break after leaving office, after having served under Trump for the past four years, first as CIA director before becoming secretary of state.
He said he might do some writing, but as for now he is focused on closing out his department "in a way that respects the American people" and on reflecting on the "incredible opportunity and challenge" he has had in his two administration positions.
Pompeo also thanked all the "kind people" who have written him over the past few weeks to thank him for his service, and expressed gratitude to the support they provided him and Trump as they delivered the president's America First policy worldwide.
