Inserting the words "under God" into the pledge of allegiance in the 1950s made the pledge "divisible" by defining patriotism in terms of religious beliefs, David Niose of the American Humanist Association said Tuesday on
Newsmax TV's "America's Forum."
"Before that, we were one nation indivisible, but by adding that, we defined patriotism in terms of God belief," Niose said. "Those who don't believe somehow now are portrayed as less patriotic."
Niose joined Kristina Arriaga, executive director of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, to debate allowing prayer at school-sponsored events and meetings.
