Rodney Davis to Newsmax TV: Proxy Voting Is 'Unconstitutional,' Court Will Rule Against It

Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., told Newsmax TV on Thursday that proxy voting in Congress is “unconstitutional,” and that the court will rule against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., in her attempt to allow it.

“I do believe it’s unconstitutional,” Davis said on “The National Report” Thursday morning, noting that he “was one of the original signatories” on the Republican lawsuit against Pelosi over proxy voting. “I have said from the beginning of this proxy process, allowing somebody else to cast a vote on the House floor on behalf of your constituents is unconstitutional. It's something that's never been done before, it's something that was just started yesterday on the House floor, and I think it's a process that the courts need to intervene in, absolutely.”

The congressman added that legislators have “proven that we can safely social distance ourselves while we're voting, role people in an alphabetical order, but speaker Pelosi decided in the midst of this pandemic to create a proxy process rather than having us come back to have that face-to-face contact to really legislate together. That's why it's important for us to be here to communicate with each other, to talk about my bill for COBRA coverage, to talk about issues that are important to the American people, and unfortunately, she decided to go ahead and put something in place that I think the courts are going to rule unconstitutional.”
