"What Republican tea party extremists like Scott Walker are doing is they are grabbing us by the hair and pulling us back. It is not going to happen on our watch," she said, later admitting that she "shouldn't have used" the comparison to domestic violence.
"It was along the lines of we understand domestic violence is an incredibly serious issue and by no means meant to belittle the experience of domestic violence survivors. That's a statement you never want to have to make," Rothman said.
"It's an analogy that went way too far. It was crude, quite offensive … She was right to apologize."
Rothman added that GOP senate candidates can use the cracks as campaign fodder.
"Republican senate candidates are perfectly justified to now every time they get a question from a debate moderator about access to contraception or other such 'war on women' [issues] to say our party isn't led by an individual who belittled domestic violence," he said.
