Kirk Cameron: 'Saving Christmas' Returns Joy, and Christ, to Holiday

In spite of the cultural push to make Christmas less and less about Christ, actor Kirk Cameron tells Newsmax that there's no way to really "get away from the biblical meaning of Christmas."

"After all, it is called "Christ-mas," Cameron told J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Tuesday.

"Culturally, we would love to push Christ out of Christmas, if we don't like who Christ is and what he stands for, but it's really hard to do that when the very first Christmas is the event that separated A.D. from B.C," he said. "It split time in two."

"As a nation, we understand it's important, but so many things are covering it up like barnacles on a ship," he said.

Cameron is starring in the upcoming movie "Saving Christmas," which is set to be released in select theaters on Nov. 14 for two weeks.

The former "Growing Pains" actor says the inspiration for movie is that he "loves Christmas."

"There's a lot of people who want to put a big wet blanket on all this Christmas celebration, fun and holy time of year," Cameron said.

"I decided it's time for someone to step up and start inserting maximum joy and celebration by putting Christ back into Christmas."

He contends that the movie is even something that non-Christians will be able to appreciate.

"I was a nonbeliever and Christmas resonated with me. That's why I am a Christian today," he said.

Cameron explained that while "Christmas is for those of us who love Christ ... it's also for people who have no clue who he is or why he's the most important figure in all of human history."

He believes that "Christmas is for everybody," but that "Saving Christmas" is especially for someone who "wants to be a scrooge" and that sometimes "these people are in church."

"They have such a legalistic wedgie that they feel that they've got to be so particular about what day it is or how they celebrate the birth of Christ that they don't even want to celebrate it at all," Cameron said.

"This movie is for them too."
