Bernie Kerik: Little Surprise in Rise of 'Homegrown' Terrorists

Canada quietly increased its terror alert over the past week, a possible indicator that officials there "may have had some intelligence that we don't know about or at least we don't know about publicly," former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said Wednesday on Newsmax TV's "America’s Forum."

Kerik was referring to the attack Wednesday morning on a Canadian solider, the second incident targeting the Canadian military in 48 hours.

Canadian television reported that one soldier was shot at the Canadian War Memorial in Ottawa and "numerous gunmen" were seen running toward nearby Parliament buildings, where more shots were fired.

At least one suspected gunman was shot and killed inside the Parliament buildings and Ottawa police were searching for more suspects.

On Monday, a suspected jihadist struck two soldiers with his car in Quebec. One of the soldiers has since died from his injuries. Police fatally shot the assailant, who is believed to have been "radicalized."

People need to wake up and see that jihad is on the rise, Kerik said.

"The problem here is people are going to watch this broadcast and they're going to act shocked, they're going to be surprised," he said. "This should surprise no one. If these are radical extremists, radical Muslim extremists, this should surprise no one. They've talked about doing this for years.

"We are finding more homegrown, internal-borne, radicalized extremists coming to light as of recent. We had these three girls right here in the United States that were on the way to Syria. None of this should surprise anyone.

"I mean, they've been telling us for years they're coming and I have to believe there are a number of them here, in Canada, in Australia, in countries, Western countries, countries that live in a democracy, that live in freedom," Kerik said. "These groups, they've been talking about it for years so no one should be surprised if that's the case. No one."

Americans must remember that Muslim extremists would relish another attack of 9/11 proportions.

"The further we get away from 9/11, people have sort of forgot about it," he said. "Listen to what they're doing in Iraq, in Syria, in other places. They're going to be doing it here if we don't fight them there and have victory."
