Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told Newsmax TV on Thursday he was "very disappointed" with the Republican tax-reform plan introduced by Senate leaders.
"They should cut taxes for growth in the economy," the former Texas representative who led the chamber from 2003 to 2005, told "Newsmax Now" host Bill Tucker. "They should make it simpler and fair.
"They need to understand just getting any tax reform bill passed is not going to help them with their base.
"If it's a tax bill with no substance, the base is going to do what they did in Virginia: They're going to stay home.
"This is very, very dangerous what they're doing," DeLay said. "Playing around with the Senate bill is really bad."

He called for strong reform legislation that would grow the nation's economy.
"It will create some growth," he said of the Senate legislation, "but nowhere near the kind of growth that could be created if they were bold.
"Neither house is even doing anything about capital gains," DeLay added, referring to both the House and Senate legislation.
"[Former President Barack] Obama raised the capital gains tax — and they eliminated the capital gains tax.
"There's no boldness there," he told Tucker. "I'm really disappointed."
