As the country still grapples with combating the coronavirus pandemic, national security experts say adversarial countries with access to biological warfare agents are taking notes on just how easily they can upend the U.S. economy, or worse, wipe out large amounts of the population.

Biothreats can stem from naturally occurring pathogens, lab accidents where a dangerous material is negligently or purposely leaked, or deliberate attacks aimed at damaging the economy or welfare of people.
