Legendary former Polish President Lech Walesa – who created the movement that brought down the Soviet Empire in the 1980s – issued an urgent warning Thursday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington: Western civilization is dead without strong American leadership.

"The United States has to lead," Walesa said. "This is the moment we're at. Many civilizations in the past have crumbled, because somewhere along the way they forgot about leadership, and we're heading in the same direction with our civilization unless the United States retakes its leadership role."
