A proposal by Democrats to take a look at the size of the U.S. House of Representatives could wind up resulting in major changes when it comes to how the country elects the president — posing a possible threat to the Republican Party. An expanded House would give large states, like California, even more power, while effectively reducing the influence of smaller, conservative states. The ripple effect, according to experts, could give Democrats a better chance at winning the presidency by increasing the electoral college representation of blue states.

Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., has revived the “Congress Commission Act,” which would create a bipartisan commission to study the current size of the House, look at how members are elected, and study the impacts of gerrymandering.
