Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger lashed out at President Donald Trump for his public criticism of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, saying in a tweet that this is not the way a president should conduct himself.

Kinzinger, who is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has been a longtime critic of Trump.

Politico reported that after Trump was nominated as the Republican candidate for president last summer, Kinzinger publicly announced that he would not vote for him.

The congressman said that he had gone to the Republican National Convention hoping to support the party's candidate, but that he could not do so due to Trump's behavior and views on many issues.

Just a few weeks ago, the Illinois congressman criticized Donald Trump Jr. for agreeing to a meeting with a Russian lawyer during the election campaign.

"Opposition research is one thing; It's how politics works," Kinzinger told CNN.

"If you look at any presidential election, they spend millions on opposition research. That's fine, that's how the system works. But if an e-mail says the Russian government has information, that is when you hit the hard stop on it."
