A leading Democrat blasted a report that claimed President Donald Trump tried to fire special counsel Robert Mueller last year, calling the alleged move "Nixonian."
According to The Hill, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said if Trump were to fire the man running the Russia investigation, a "Constitutional crisis" would occur.
"The reports that the president not only considered firing special counsel Mueller, but went so far as to order it, demonstrate the Nixonian lengths this president is prepared to go to protect himself," Schiff said.
"Congress must make clear that any effort to remove the special counsel or impede his work would touch off a constitutional crisis which would imperil this presidency and do grave damage to our nation."
Schiff is the top-ranked Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, a panel that is conducting its own investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.
Schiff also was critical of Republicans' attacks on the FBI in regards to the Russia investigation.
"It is time for them to put country and rule of law before party," he said.
