Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, slammed Republicans on Tuesday in a tweet for failing to provide oversight of the Trump administration.
Allegations against Trump campaign data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica include that the company illegally obtained private information from more than 50 million people, according to The Hill.
Cambridge University Prof. Aleksandr Kogan allegedly got a hold of the data by using a Facebook app that he created, although just 270,000 people gave permission for their data to be obtained through the app.
Schiff on Tuesday also slammed the Republicans in a column for USA Today, saying "their initial commitment to 'follow the facts' is now the latest casualty of the political imperative of protecting the president, no matter the cost to our democracy."
Earlier this week, Schiff sent a letter to the Cambridge Analytica whistleblower, Christopher Wylie, asking for documents and other information related to any illegal activity, The Hill reported.
"The Committee's Minority is seeking testimony from the whistleblower about the reported misappropriation of private data, as well as information to determine where the data was stored, how it was used, and whether third parties accessed and exploited the information, including in Russia," Schiff said in the letter.
After the majority Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee said last week that they would end the panel's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, because no evidence of collusion with the Russian government by Americans had been found, Schiff criticized the decision in a tweet.
