Former Vice President Al Gore hasn't done much to aid Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in her race for the White House, only endorsing her the day of the Democratic National Convention, and not publicly commenting much on her candidacy, The Hill reports.
Since tweeting his support for Clinton, Gore has remained mostly silent on her campaign.
"I am voting for Hillary Clinton. I urge everyone else to do the same," Gore repeated in an interview with ThinkProgress published Aug. 22, one of the few times he's reiterated his support for the former secretary of state. But he has also endorsed Democrat Patty Judge in her campaign to unseat Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley in Iowa.
"I particularly urge anyone who is concerned about the climate crisis, sees it as the kind of priority that I see it as, to look at the sharp contrast between the solar plan that Secretary Clinton has put forward, and her stated commitment to support the Clean Power Plan, and the contrast between what she has said and is proposing, with the statements of the Republican nominee, which gives me great concern."
According to Carter Eskew, a friend of Gore's who worked on his campaign, Gore has been steadily moving away from politics since his unsuccessful 2000 presidential campaign. Gore won the popular vote but George W. Bush captured the majority vote in the Electoral College to win the White House for Republicans.
"The 2000 election was a fairly unsatisfying way to end that period of his life," Eskew told the Hill. "So it took some time. ... The process [of moving away from politics] is further along now than it was then…. I don't think it's necessarily fully conscious, but there's been a ratcheting down, each election, of his political involvement. I think he's finding his purpose in the things that he's doing now."
