Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions holds a substantial Republican primary lead in the Alabama race to be the GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate seat in 2020, according to a survey released by Wes Anderson of OnMessage Inc.
Sessions has the support of 44% of the those polled, more than double his closest competitor, former Auburn head football coach Tommy Tuberville, at 21%.
Rep. Bradley Byrne, at 14%, is the only other contender in double digits.
The survey, conducted on behalf of the Sessions campaign, is the first made public since Secretary of State John Merrill left the race last week, according to Yellow Hammer News.
Other results of the poll show:
- Sessions also holds a comfortable lead in favorability at 71%. Tuberville registered 50% in this category, while Byrne was at 37%.
- 90% of those surveyed said the Democrats should stop trying to impeach President Donald Trump and focus on their jobs in Congress instead. Only 5% disagreed.
The poll, which was conducted between Dec. 3-5 via live telephone callers (65% landline and 35% cellphone), measures 700 likely Alabama GOP primary voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
