Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has endorsed Jamaal Bowman, who is challenging Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., in the upcoming primary.
Ocasio-Cortez made her announcement in a Wednesday night tweet. She wrote: “This moment requires renewed and revitalized leadership across the country AND at the ballot box. On June 23rd, New York will be holding primary elections. Tomorrow I will be rolling out a slate of New York endorsements. Tonight, I am endorsing @JamaalBowmanNY for Congress
Bowman, a former middle school principal already has been endorsed by the liberal group Democracy for America and the progressive group Justice Democrats.
Bowman responded to the Ocasio-Cortez endorsement with a tweet of his own. He wrote: ”Wow. I am so grateful for this endorsement. @AOC’S commitment to working people of all backgrounds, her engaged presence and her commitment to a more responsive Democratic Party have inspired me immensely. We’re building an amazing coalition to deliver change in #NY16.”
Meanwhile, Fox News noted that Engel was caught on a hot mic Tuesday saying he “wouldn’t care” about not being allowed to speak at a news conference about the unrest in his district following the death of George Floyd – if he wasn't in a competitive Democratic primary.
