Attorney General Jeff Sessions should recuse himself from any investigation into retired Gen. Michael Flynn, according to Rep. Bennie Thompson in a Wednesday CNN interview.
"For the American people, I think it's absolutely essential for the integrity of his office and for the American people to know exactly what's going on. So, step aside, (get an) independent prosecutor," Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, said.
Thompson on CNN Wednesday said that Sessions was a supporter of President Donald Trump during the presidential campaign, and he did not believe the former Alabama senator could remain impartial in an investigation of Trump or his administration.
"For Attorney General Sessions to be involved in this clearly puts a cloud over whether an investigation can be conducted fairly," Thompson said, according to the Washington Examiner.
"If there had ever been a question of impropriety in the Obama administration, I think Attorney General Holder would have stepped aside," Thompson added.
Flynn resigned amid questions about what Flynn, then Trump's national security adviser, said to a Russian ambassador in phone calls before Trump was inaugurated.
U.S. intelligence agencies and Congress are continuing to investigate the issue.
