President Donald Trump said Monday that his predecessor would be named a “national hero” by “the Fake News’ if he had met with North Korea.
Trump tweeted Monday morning, the week after his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, that former President Barack Obama would have been called “a national hero” if he had “gotten along with North Korea and made the initial steps towards a deal" that Trump did.
Multiple news outlets, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, have questioned whether the summit and the statement issued afterwards will actually lead to denuclearization, or if Trump made large concessions for "a vague promise," according to The Atlantic.
"Unfortunately, the deal Trump made with Kim Jong-un was pretty underwhelming," HBO’s "Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver said Sunday. "They agreed to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, which isn’t just ambiguous compared to the multiple previous agreements involving North Korea, it’s also close to meaningless."
