Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., says no member of Congress should vote against President Donald Trump's nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court.
"There's no reason anybody should be voting against this guy," Sasse said of Judge Neil Gorsuch on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Tuesday. "He should be confirmed 100-0."
Sasse, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, added, "and you got a whole bunch of people trying to figure out a way to hyperventilate to say, 'He's probably kicked a puppy somewhere along the way in his life.' And there's no there, there.
"He's a guy who I think comes to the court every day on the 10th circuit wearing a referee's jersey — not trying to wear a Broncos versus a Packers jersey — and that's what you need in a judge," Sasse said.
The senator also appeared on Fox News' "Special Report with Bret Baier," where he decried Democrats' "hyperventilating" over Gorsuch.
"I heard a lot of attempts at hyperventilating," Sasse said, specifically of Democrats on his committee. "I don't know what they have [on him]. The guy is a judge . . . he knows what a judge is, and he's agreeable and pleasant."
During his opening remarks to the committee Monday, Sasse spoke about the role of judges, saying "For standing before court your gender, your skin, your bank account, cannot decide your fate. In the same way a judge's race, class, and gender should not decide your fate. Nor should your judges' race, class, or gender decide your fate," according to Conservative Review.
"It is our job as legislators — men and women who are hired and fired by the American people — to empathize, to identify with people's hopes and struggles," Sasse continued. "The judge must instead faithfully and dispassionately apply the law to the facts of the case."
