Sanders: Trump Broke Promise to 'Stand With the Working People'

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., derided President Donald Trump on Tuesday for not following through on his campaign vow to help working Americans.

"During the course of the campaign, he said 'I'm going to stand with the working people, I'm going to take on the pharmaceutical industry and lower the outrageous price of prescription drugs," Sanders told "CBS This Morning." "That's what he said. During the campaign, he said one set of things, and the policies he is implementing right now are very different."

The senator, who ran as a Democrat in the presidential election Trump eventually won, added that Trump "said, 'I'm gonna drain the swamp, I'm gonna get rid of the powerful special interests.' Well, he has brought more billionaires into this administration than any president in the history of this country. He says, 'I'm going to guarantee healthcare to everybody.' Well, he supported legislation that would throw 32 millions people off of healthcare."

Sanders also addressed the impact of Hurricane Harvey on Houston and other parts of Texas, relating it to his own experience in Vermont after Hurricane Irene.

"We went through that in 2011, I think people don't appreciate unless you're there talking to the folks who are impacted, what it means to lose a home you've lived in your whole life that was there the day before," he said.

"If there's any silver lining in the terrible suffering that's going on in Houston, is to remember that we are all one country, and I am sure whether you're white or black or Latino, people are coming together to help each other all over the country," he added. "We are one nation and we have got to stop the type of divisions that Trump and others are bringing about trying to divide us up."
