Bill Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, has delivered an eleventh-hour pep talk to Republicans who loath to see Donald Trump tapped as the GOP presidential nominee this week — insisting a third-party challenge by Mitt Romney or Ben Sasse is still possible.
In an emotional tweet he fired off on Sunday, Kristol said:
The last-second message tops months of Trump-bashing by Kristol who has led a behind-the-scenes effort to try to recruit a new candidate to run as an independent.
That move has infuriated the billionaire real-estate tycoon, who's engaged in a war of words with the conservative commentator.
After Trump referred to Kristol as "a loser," Kristol fired back:
Romney, a two-time presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor, is believed to have considered a stab at running, but decided against it.
Sasse, a U.S. senator representing Nebraska, has been highly critical of Trump, leading some pundits to believe he could be a possible last-second spoiler at this week's Republican National Convention.
