Former CIA agent Bob Baer on Sunday said it was “very, very suspicious,” that Donald Trump Jr. didn’t reveal the name of the acquaintance who introduced him to a Russian lawyer promising him damaging information about Hillary Clinton during the presidential campaign.
"My sense here is we're approaching the smoking gun, that this meeting may have very well have been to talk about hacked emails,” Baer said while talking with Ana Cabrera on "CNN Newsroom.”
"The fact that Donald Trump Jr. didn't come forward to the FBI immediately in the middle of this scandal and say here's what happened in this meeting, we think possibly they were proposing a crime, here's everything I know, they're withholding, and that's what disturbs me as a former CIA officer.”
Trump Jr. agreed to meet with the Kremlin-linked lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, after she said she had information about Clinton, the Democratic Party presidential nominee. The New York Times published the report Sunday, citing three advisers to the White House, and said the meeting was also attended by his campaign chairman at the time, Paul J. Manafort and Jared Kushner.
Trump Jr. in a statement said his father knew nothing about the meeting, and the White House followed up with a similar statement.
"The credibility in the White House is so bad at this point, that I'd take the statements of the Russians over the White House," said Baer. "Nothing they've said so far has turned out to be true. ... Frankly, I'll wait until the FBI brings the evidence forward, then we can judge.”
