House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., is preparing to subpoena the Department of Justice this week for documents related to how the FBI handled the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email server, The Hill reports.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the top Judiciary Committee Democrat, was told Monday by Goodlatte, R-Va., a subpoena was coming — committee rules give the minority party a right to two day's notice "before issuing any subpoena," according to The Hill.
Goodlatte is after 1.2 million documents gathered by Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz during his probe into the Clinton email inquiry. Horowitz's investigation has already led to the firing of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, as Horowitz ruled McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and "lacked candor, including under oath, on multiple occasions."
"We need to have those documents," Goodlatte told Fox News on Sunday. "We've had communications with the Department of Justice about this, and they know that not just myself and Chairman [Trey] Gowdy, but many other members of the House are very concerned about the slow nature of those documents being produced. And as I say, actions are going to have to take a new level here very soon."
House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., is helping Goodlatte lead a joint probe into "potential bias" within the FBI in 2016 and 2017 as the bureau obtained surveillance warrants related to the Russia interference probe, and just last week the pair called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to appoint a special counsel to probe the FBI and DOJ.
"There is evidence of bias, trending toward animus, among those charged with investigating serious cases," Gowdy and Goodlatte wrote in a letter to Sessions. "There is evidence political opposition research was used in court filings. There is evidence this political opposition research was neither vetted before it was used nor fully revealed to the relevant tribunal."
