Former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura will attend Donald Trump's presidential inauguration, The Dallas Morning News reports.

"They are pleased to be able to witness the peaceful transfer of power — a hallmark of American democracy — and swearing-in of President Trump and Vice President (Mike) Pence," Bush's spokesman Freddy Ford said in a statement.

The relationship between Bush and Trump has been strained. The newspaper notes Bush, whose brother Jeb unsuccessfully ran against Trump, did not vote for the now president-elect or Hillary Clinton.

But the Morning News said Bush congratulated Trump after the election.

Former President Jimmy Carter has already announced he will attend, according to Politico.

Bush's father, George H.W. Bush will not be attending. A spokesman cited his age, 92, as the reason why, the website reports.

Former President Bill Clinton and wife Hillary, who lost in a bitter campaign against Trump, also will attend, CNN reported Tuesday.

President Barack Obama is expected.
