Republicans will lose their majority in both houses of Congress over Americans' "negative reaction" toward President Donald Trump's "endless tweets," Wall Street guru Byron Wien told CNBC on Wednesday.
It's one of Wien's top surprises for 2018, an annual list the Blackstone vice chairman publishes.
"Almost everyone thinks that the Democrats have a good chance of taking the House," Wien said on CNBC. "I think they have a good chance of taking the Senate as well."
Wien pushed back against the notion that this "surprise" is nothing more than a mainstream consensus and a talking point of Democrats.
"Taking the House is consensus. But taking the Senate is not consensus," Wien said.
"One of the surprises I played around with was Trump gaining seats in the House. But I rejected it because I do think the reaction of the American people is pretty negative toward him," Wien said.
"There are going to be a lot of events between now and November," Wien said. "And I think they're going to work against him."
