It is looking more and more likely Republican John Cox will earn a spot on the November ballot in California's gubernatorial race, according to new polls.
The Hill cited internal tracking polls that showed Cox is now in second place behind Democrat and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. There are 27 candidates running, but the top two vote-getters — regardless of party — in Tuesday's primary will advance to the general election.
The polls show Newsom with just under 30 percent support, while Cox has around 20 percent.
A group of candidates that includes Republican State Assemblyman Travis Allen and two Democrats — former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and state Treasurer John Chiang — each have roughly 10 percent support.
Cox's stock surged after President Donald Trump tweeted about him twice last month, urging voters in the Golden State to choose him.
The Hill claimed House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich convinced Trump to first tweet about Cox on May 18.
Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, is not eligible to run for his third consecutive term and fifth term overall as the state's chief executive.
