Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, is increasingly in focus, as questions are arising regarding his connection to Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer, as well as a probe into Trump's digital campaign, which is run by Kushner.
Kushner has had to add to his security clearance form twice to note meetings with Russian individuals that went unreported, The Hill is reporting.
"With Mr. Kushner, we have not one, not two, but three examples where he forgot meetings with Russians and has had to go back and amend his disclosure forms. I think, if I had a meeting that involved Russian government efforts to try to help candidate Trump and hurt (Hillary) Clinton, that I would remember that," Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said Sunday on CNN, according to USA Today.
Investigators are looking into whether the Trump digital campaign helped Russia target voters in key states and cities so that Russian operatives could spread false and negative reports about Hillary Clinton in the run-up to Election Day in 2016, McClatchy reports.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Thursday called for Kushner's security clearance to be revoked "immediately," The Hill reported.
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., called for Kushner to exit his post.
"You don't think the Republicans would be calling for the resignation of an Obama official who allowed the president and vice president to openly lie about a major national security issue? He watched his father-in-law on TV say no one in the (Trump) administration talked to the Russian government," Murphy told reporters Thursday, The Hill notes.
Criticisms of Kushner have come from Republicans as well as Democrats, according to The Hill.
Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., have both questioned Kushner's security clearance in the past. They have sent a letter to Marcia Lee Kelly, who handles White House security clearances, and Andrew McCabe, the acting FBI director, according to the Washington Examiner.
The Hill reported that they have not gotten a response and another Republican called for all of Trump's children to exit the White House.
"I'm going out on a limb here, but I would say that I think it would be in the president's best interest if he removed all of his children from the White House, not only Donald (Jr.) but Ivanka and Jared Kushner," Rep. Bill Flores, R-Texas, said Thursday, The Texas Tribune reports.
