Dr. Ben Carson, the former presidential candidate and close advisor to Donald Trump, says the billionaire real-estate tycoon is becoming a changed man through prayer.

And his efforts will soon be visible on the campaign trail as he prepares to become the official GOP presidential nominee at this month's Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

"Donald Trump is actually making some sincere effort now to strengthen his spiritual life, and I know that for a fact," Carson said recently on "Washington Watch," a radio show produced by the Family Research Council.

"He's starting to pray and talk about things that he never would have been dealing with previously. I think it's having an impact.

"I think you're going to see somebody who is a little less self-centered and starting to think about others and the tremendous responsibility that comes with the position that he's seeking."

If a kinder, gentler Trump is in the making, it will likely come as a huge relief to establishment Republicans who've spent months of hand-wringing over his often-explosive comments and refusal to abide by the GOP playbook.

Carson's statements were recorded and first reported by BuzzFeed News political reporter Andrew Kaczynski.
